Pozieres Ridge Photos

Many thanks again to listener Bob! Just a few photos of the Pozieres area. The view from the Windmill really shows the flat farmland all around. Many times the Australians had to move to their trenches over this ground in daylight, and in full view of the Germans.

Thanks to listener Bob, here are a few photos of Mametz Wood and the memorial to the men of the 38th (Welsh) Division. You can really see how thick and, frankly, menacing the wood looks even today.

Episode 11: Somme – The Grind, Part 1

South of the Somme, the French continue their successful attacks on the Germans after the 1st of July. To the north, from the 2nd through the 14th of July, the British begin grinding towards the German second position with local, uncoordinated attacks. The Germans work desperately to recover their defense. Everyone bleeds.
